"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him." John 3:16-17
I'll try to refrain from mentioning that these verses of scripture are the most frequently used at sporting events, NASCAR races and American Idol. Ah... It looks like I have failed already.
These verses are some of the most essential Bible verses to our Christian faith.
God loves us so much that He would send His only son to pay the ransom for our sins.
This is obviously a testament to how much God loves us (the world and every person in it) and wants to see us (the world and every person in it) come to saving faith in Him.
But have you thought about how these verses are not simply about God's love for us, but how they display the value and worth that God has for us?
You may have grown up in a nice suburban house with a mom and a dad who love you very much. You may have had supportive teachers and coaches to encourage you along the way. You may have a good sense of your own self-worth and how important you are.
You also may have grown up in a household where you lived with only one of your parents. Maybe none. You may have been abused and neglected; mistreated and misunderstood. You may not think you are important or valuable because people have told you, one way or another, that you are not.
John 3:16-17 should tell you that that is nonsense.
The Creator of the universe has taken a personal interest in making sure that you live life to the fullness of His plan for you.
In that, He has declared your worth.
You are not defined by your faults and your failures. You are not defined by the person or people who have taken your innocence. You are not valued because of what you can do for anyone else.
You are valuable because God says you are valuable. The very fact that God loves and cares for you should tell you that. You don't need to search for worth in your relationships and achievements. God has given you worth and value.
You are loved by the Almighty, All Powerful, All Knowing, All Consuming Maker, Creator and Sustainer of the Universe.
And if He says you are worth it, you better believe you are worth it.
You are loved. Amen.
