Words are Powerful

“The tongue has the power of life and death.” Proverbs 18:21

Your words matter. Words impact lives. Your words are either giving life or taking life. Stop and think about this for a moment…The Words You Speak Are Powerful!!!

Some words are not only life-giving, but life-changing. When we speak words that encourage, inspire and motivate it breeds hope, courage and confidence to the ears hearing the message. Life-giving words spoken are positive and builds up the spirit. Life-giving words can change the countenance of the person listening.

On the other hand, words have the power to damage, destroy and devastate a person. These words are toxic. A toxic substance is something that causes serious harm or even death. Toxic words are words that pierce our heart and cause deep wounds. And when we internalize these toxic words, we allow them to distort and deceive us from the truth about who we are in Christ.

The Bible contrasts life-giving words and toxic words:

“Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.” (Proverbs 12:18)

“The tongue that brings healing is a tree of life, but a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit.” (Proverbs 15:4)

“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” (Ephesians 4:29)

Take a few minutes to consider the kind of words and conversations you typically have with people. The type of words and conversations you have with your spouse, your children, your family, your friends, your supervisor, your co-workers and your neighbors. Consider the following:

When listening…
Do you like to hear words that are edifying and encouraging, or words that are critical and hurtful?

When speaking…
Do you speak words that are edifying and encouraging, or words that are critical and hurtful?

Are your words life-giving or toxic?
I challenge and urge you to speak life-giving words every chance you get because…
