Where is God?

Jim Coyle

"Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded."  James 4:8

Sometimes it seems as if God has pulled away and turned His back on us.  We feel that He is not hearing our prayers, let alone answering them.  James gives us the reason for this, and a solution.  If we are far from God, it is because our choices are separating us from Him.

God is unchanging, His character remains holy, His faithfulness is constant; it is us who change.  We chose our own direction; we spend less time with God in prayer and Bible reading.  As we pull away in pursuit of our plans and goals, sin creeps into our lives.  In time, we realize that we are no longer close to God and ask Him to come back, but it is us who must go back to Him.  When we choose to return, He will meet us as the father did the prodigal son in Luke15:20.

Drawing near to God requires 2 things: First you must cleanse your way of living.  If you have been actively involved in sin, you must repent and confess it.  Second, you must make sure that your attitudes, thoughts and motives are right and in agreement with God’s Word.

If God seems far away, do what is necessary to draw near to Him.

Close to Thee

Thou my everlasting portion, more than friend or life to me,
All along my pilgrim journey, Savior, let me walk with thee.

Refrain:
Close to thee, close to thee, Close to thee, close to thee,
All along my pilgrim journey, Savior, let me walk with thee.
