What is Man

Jim Coyle

"When I consider your heavens, the work your fingers, the moon and the stars you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him?"  Psalm 8:3-4

I was born in Los Angeles and have seldom been exposed to enough lack of city lights to really see the nighttime sky.  Over the years, I have occasionally gone to places where you can really see all the stars.  I recall one night my wife and I were at her uncle’s ranch in South Dakota.   As we stood in meadow gazing at the nighttime sky, I was amazed at the magnitude of the stars and the beauty of God’s creation.  As I stood looking up, I thought of the question David asked in Psalm 8, "What is man in comparison to all of God’s creation?"

This question is answered in Genesis 1:27, "So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them."  God created man as an eternal being.  Except for man, everything mentioned in Genesis 1 will someday be destroyed (Revelation 21).

Of all God’s creation, man is the only one He made for a personal relationship.

Everyone will spend eternity somewhere.  The question we should be asking in not “What is man?” but, "Do I have the right relationship with God?"
