Walking as Jesus Walked

Sam Petitfils

"Whoever claims to live in Him must live as Jesus did."  I John 2:6

When the wife of missionary Adoniram Judson told him that a newspaper article likened him to some of the apostles, Judson replied, "I do not want to be like a Paul or any mere man.  I want to be like Christ.  I want to follow Him only, copy His teachings, drink in His Spirit, and place my feet in His footprints.  Oh, to be more like Christ!"

We live in an age of hero worship, celebrity idols, and man-made gods.  But, really the only perfect man that ever lived is Jesus Christ (see II Corinthians 5:21; I Peter 2:22).  He modeled compassion, patience, love, humility, kindness, gentleness, and many other admirable virtues.  In each and every situation He faced, not once did He say or do anything that displeased the Father.

We have something that Jesus does not have:  a sin nature.  Still, we need to look to and fix our eyes on Jesus (Hebrews 12:2).  We can never hope for perfection in this life, but why not set the standard high?  With Jesus, we have a perfect model.

Here are some questions we can ask to measure our progress:

1.  How do we respond when faced with immense pressures?  (Remember Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane or standing before Pilate?)

2.  Do we place the interests of others above our own?  (Jesus left the glories of heaven to rescue those who rebelled against Him.  Philippians 2:5-8, John 17:5.)

3.  Looking back one or two years, have we made progress in our quest to be Christ-like?  Have we demonstrated more love, compassion, service, and sacrifice?

4.  Are we willing to exchange an earthly crown for a heavenly one?  (Jesus did.  John 6:15).

5.  Is our focus clear and fixed on Jesus, turning away from the glories and rewards of this world?

While we will fail and stumble many times in this life, we can look to our perfect example, Jesus Christ.
