Time With God

Cathy Hurtado

"One thing I have asked from the Lord, that I shall seek: That I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, To behold the beauty of the Lord and to meditate in His temple."  Psalm 27:4

Psalm 27 was my first favorite Psalm, particularly verse 4.  As a young believer, my greatest desire was to spend time with God.  I loved Him and wanted to know Him.  It was nothing to get up at 5am and spend a couple hours curled up by the heater with my Bible.  I didn’t do it because I should.  I couldn’t wait to spend time with God.  I understood David’s longing to be God’s presence.

The sad truth is that it is easy to lose that love.  Life gets busy.  We become too self-reliant.  We entertain lots of distractions which consume our time and energy.  Soon, our time with God is intermittent. Then it feels more of a burden than a joy.  Instead of closeness, it is reduced to a ritual.

Spend some time reflecting on the time you spend with God.  Do you need to make any changes?

Meditate on the following verses:

"I know you are enduring patiently and bearing up for my name's sake, and you have not grown weary.  But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first.  Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent, and do the works you did at first."  Revelation 2:3-5a

"Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord."  Philippians 3:8

"You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore."  Psalm 16:11
