"Now concerning the times and the seasons, brothers, you have no need to have anything written to you. For you yourselves are fully aware that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. While people are saying, “There is peace and security,” then sudden destruction will come upon them as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. But you are not in darkness, brothers, for that day to surprise you like a thief." I Thessalonians 5:1-4
Several months ago, I purchased an amplifier to power a subwoofer which was given to me by my brother. As I drove around in my car, I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed the deafening bass as I literally felt the music. Realizing the potential nuisance I could become, I was mindful not to “bump” too loud, especially in residential areas during the evening.
However, it seems that somewhere along the way I attracted attention from someone who wanted what I had. I remember heading to work one morning and listening to the radio as I usually do; but something was missing, that something was the extra bass supplied by my sub! The previous night I was up later than usual due to do my studies. So when the time came to hit the hay, I was more than ready. On the other hand, if I would have known a thief was coming that night, I would have been more willing to guard my car than to go to sleep.
In the passage of Scripture above, Paul reminds the church in Thessalonica about the return of Jesus coming like a thief in the night. The idea is that the second coming of our Lord will be both unexpected and unwelcomed for the unbeliever. Conversely, for the believer it should not catch us by surprise. For those who love Jesus, we should be eagerly awaiting and anticipating His arrival.
Even though we may not know exactly when Christ will come back, we do know that Christ will come back.
"But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only." Matthew 24:36
The inevitable return of our Savior should not only bring hope to the believer, but it should also inspire us to live holy lives in light of this truth.
"And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure." I John 3:3
· So are you ready for certain the return of Jesus Christ? If not, I encourage you to seek God’s forgiveness provided by the very same Jesus who is soon to return.
· If you are ready and looking forward to the return of Christ, I encourage you to continue living in obedience to His Word and warning others of His sure and sudden reappearance.
Heavenly Father, thank You for the hope we have in You. I pray that we as children of the light would be living our lives as if You were coming back today. Help us to remember that we are not guaranteed tomorrow on earth, but we are guaranteed eternity in heaven. In Jesus’ name, amen.
