Recently, my wife and a few friends took a trip to the beach. I put on my trunks and ran out into the Pacific Ocean. The waves very small and I was able to stand up in them without having to hold my breath and dive through them. It reminded me of when I was a little kid and used to go to the beach with my parents.
One time, when I was nine or ten years old, I was playing in the water, and made a rookie mistake – I turned my back on the waves for too long and got smashed down into the ground. It took me completely by surprise. I was underwater with a mouth full of sand and was being pulled out in the undertow. I finally come up gasping for air, flailing about in the water. I couldn’t keep myself up above the water and the waves kept tossing me about. The intense taste of salt water filled my mouth and burned my nose. I was scared and started to panic, when my foot hit something. There was a big rock right underneath me. I planted my feet down, and was able to stand upright. The water only came up to my chest.
Once I found that rock, I wasn’t scared anymore. The water couldn’t move me, and I could anticipate the coming waves, hold my breath, and go underneath them. After I rested, I swam closer to the shore and got back to having fun at the beach.
Sometimes, events in our life can take us by surprise. We get caught off guard and panic can set in. We start to feel helpless and tired and wonder if we’re going to make it.
The good news is that we don’t have to panic. We don’t have to worry. We always have a rock right underneath us.
"The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety." Psalm 18:2
"God’s way is perfect. All the Lord’s promises prove true. He is a shield for all who look to him for protection. For who is God except the Lord? Who but our God is a solid rock?" Psalm 18:31-32
God’s way is perfect, and His promises always prove true. He is a solid rock upon which we can firmly and confidently stand. We don’t have to panic, we don’t have to worry, we don’t have to be afraid because God is a rock, His promises prove true. He is able to protect us and take care of us. He has made many wonderful promises to us. We don’t have anything to fear when we rely on God to be our rock!
