The Lord My Strength and Fortress

Sam Petitfils

Today let's take a look at a verse from the Psalms:

Psalm 91:2: "I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress."

Have you ever had something that seemed so sure of a thing, only to have it disappear before your very eyes?  Many have sought refuge in their home, only to see it repossessed.  Some have anchored their hope in a person, only to be disappointed.  Others have held fast to their youth, only to grow old.  Where is your hope?

Psalm 91 has been a source of strength and comfort to believers for generation after generation.  Some have committed it to memory.  When we think of "refuge" or "fortress," we think of safety and protection.  During the cold war (1950-1990), many built "bomb shelters" that would protect them from enemy attack.  Here the Psalmist directs our thoughts upward, to our ultimate source of strength and protection, the Lord Himself.  Man may help for a season, but eventually he will fail us.  But God never fails us; He is our helper, and we will not be afraid (Hebrews 13:6).

Application

  • Remember that God's protection will never fail, though times may get tough.  Place your faith in God alone, and wait patiently for His deliverance.  It will come in His time.
  • Tell God often that He is your refuge and fortress, just like this Psalmist did.  These are great words to repeat to God in prayer.
  • Seek God's strength for daily living, and obey Him in all things.

Meditate on this following hymn of trust and recall it during the day.

"Trust and Obey"

When we walk with the Lord
In the light of His word,
What a glory He sheds on our way!
While we do His good will,
He abides with us still,
And with all who will trust and obey.

Trust and obey, for there's no other way
To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.
