The Knock at the Door!

Debbi Goolsby

"Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me."  Revelation 3:20

I’m really into giving kids visuals that can help them understand and relate to the scripture verse or Bible story better.  As in the story of David and Goliath, I tell it from the stand point of the “stone” David put into his sling shot. You’d be amazed at how the little ones (this works better for little ones) stand in amazement as I’m laying on the floor telling how I “flew through the air and hit the giant’s head and he fell down”. (Can you picture me on the floor in a bundled position?)

So, too, this is true with Scripture verses.  Revelations 3:20 tells how Jesus stands at the door knocking, waiting for us to open our lives to Him & asking Him into our lives.  I will go outside the room the kids are in, close the door and just knock.  Usually the kids just sit there (like many of us do) and giggle and wait for me to come back into the room.  Sometimes my knuckles hurt from knocking so much, but I continue (just as Jesus does trying to get our attention.).  Finally, one shy one comes to the door and opens the door (that took a lot of courage to be the only one who chooses to steps up and be different).  But as I stand there, the kids giggle and ask what I’m doing.  I don’t say anything until finally that very shy one says, “Aren’t you coming in?” I say, ”Are you asking?” “Yes!” And I do go in.

Here is when I get the greatest opportunity to explain Revelations 3:20.  And for each one of you reading this devotion today, it’s the same.  Jesus is knocking at the door of your heart, but you must open it first to Him and invite Him into your life.  And just as He says, “I will come in”.  He is patiently waiting for you to invite Him into your life.  Won’t you be like the little children and listen and act?  Jesus is knocking at YOUR door.  Take this moment and take hold of the better life by letting Him into your life.  It will change everything.  Don’t let pride stand in your way!

Heavenly Father, I pray for who has finally said “yes” and responded to the knocking at their heart.  Remind me that when I am telling stories to little ones, it’s okay to get down on the floor.

Now let me ask you, did you see the stone fly through their air from David’s sling to Goliath’s head as I was telling the story??  1 Samuel 17:32-50

Behold I Stand at the Door and Knock

Behold, Behold, I stand at the door and knock, knock, knock.
Behold, Behold, I stand at the door and knock, knock, knock.
If anyone hear my voice, If anyone hear my voice,
And will open, open, open the door, I will come in.
