"Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings." Psalm 17:8
God has blessed my wife and I with both an adorable son and a precious daughter. One day, while I was watching my son play in the backyard with his toy lawnmower, he kept looking back at me to make sure that I was watching him. Each time he looked back and saw that I was watching him, his face lit up with a big smile. That afternoon, as I watched my son play, I began to ponder about how God must look at His children.
Even more recently, my daughter who is a little over four months old, has made me increasingly aware of how God sees those who belong to Him. As her hearing and vision have greatly improved, she responds to my voice and face with such fascination. Every time she stares intently at me, smiling and cooing, it melts my heart away. In turn, I gaze back in to her eyes cherishing each moment.
Just as I see my son and daughter as “the apple of my eye”, God sees his children in the same manner, but with a perfect love. For those of us who have placed our faith in Jesus Christ, we have the privilege of being God’s children.
(John 1:12 - "But to all who did receive him,who believed in his name,he gave the right to become children of God.)
As believers of the good news of Jesus, we not only receive God’s forgiveness, but also the perfect righteousness of Christ as well. This is so significant to understand because there is nothing we can do earn God’s favor; just as there is nothing we can do to earn salvation. We cannot do anything that will make God love us more.
I love my children because they are mine. God loves His children because they are His. We belong to Him because we have been purchased by the blood of Jesus Christ. When our Heavenly Father sees you or me, He doesn’t see the sin that leaves us in shame, but rather He sees His Son in us, as we are clothed in the righteousness of Christ.
(2 Corinthians 5:21 - "For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.")
God cares for us deeply and will ensure our protection, because we are the apple of His eye. As a child of God, I encourage you increase your trust in our Father who loves us immensely and always watches over us.
"He found him in a desert land, and in the howling waste of the wilderness; he encircled him, he cared for him, he kept him as the apple of his eye." Deuteronomy 32:10
