Taming the Tongue
“One of my favorite verses of the entire Bible would be 1 Timothy 4:12 - “Do not let anyone look down on you, because you are young, but set an example to the believers in SPEECH, in CONDUCT, in LOVE, in FAITH and in PURITY.”
I have a hard time with setting an example in all of these areas at the same time. But one of the greatest challenges that I find in setting an example, is in my speech.
In his book, James talks about the importance of taming our tongue. In almost the entire 3rd chapter of his book, James shares how the tongue can be used as a tool to praise our God, giving Him glory - and at the same time, it can be used as a tool to curse our brother. As James says, “…this should not be” (vs. 10). We cannot be people who praise our God on one occasion, then turn around and curse (or speak evil) towards another person.
James takes it a step further and shares that our tongues can be the spark of a great fire that burns down an entire forest. That’s the power that our tongues have, the ability to take down almost anything.
Are you struggling with taming your tongue? Submit yourself to God’s Holy Spirit power, to give you the ability to speak praise to God AND speak life and truth to your brother. Ask for the power of God’s Spirit to give you deep wisdom and discernment before you speak, to speak in a way that uplifts people- and brings them closer to God.
