Storms of Life

Cliff Ellison

"That day when evening came, He said to His disciples, "Let us go over to the other side.  Leaving the crowd behind, they took Him along, just as He was, in the boat.  There were also other boats with Him.  A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat so that it was nearly swamped.  Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion.  The disciples woke Him and said to Him, "Teacher, don't you care if we drown?"  Mark 4:35-38

This story fascinates me because it paints such a good picture of the average Christian today.  We are true believers and many of us have seen or lived the miracles of God.  But, when the storms of life bombard us with countless waves of difficulties, we have a fear of drowning and forgetting the presence of God.

The Southern United States were pounded by 'catastrophic' storms this year.  Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Georgia, Virginia, and Kentucky had over 250 dead between them this past April, not to include hundreds of people who were injured.

Whether it's a tropical storm or an emotional storm caused by the different stresses of life, all of us will face a storm one day.  The Bible does not remain silent in regard to storms.  While Jesus took a nap crossing the Sea of Galilee with His Disciples, a terrible storm arose and terrified the Disciples.

We shouldn't fear the storm that comes upon us; God is with us just like Jesus was in the boat with  the Disciples.  He is in control of all circumstances in our lives.  Nothing can happen to us that is not allowed by Him.  Satan had to ask God's permission before he could harm Job.

In order for God to be in the boat with us, first we must be followers of Jesus.  Jesus commanded the Disciples to follow Him across the Sea of Galilee, and they did.  If you are being led by God as you meet the many storms of life, God will be in the boat with you.  There will be no reason to fear the storm.

"Have I not commanded you?  Be strong and courageous.  Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go."  Joshua 1:9

Peace be Still

The winds and the waves shall obey my will, Peace, be still.

Whether the wrath of the storm tossed sea, Or demons or men, or whatever it be.

No waters can swallow the ship where lies, The Master of ocean and earth and skies!

They all shall sweetly obey My will, Peace be still, Peace be still.

They all shall sweetly obey My will, Peace, Peace, be still.
