Sour Grapes

Lanita Perez

"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving."  Colossians 3:23-24

How many times have you found a task to be difficult or not enjoyable? When we go about our work with a sour attitude, we just may get sour grapes in return. The task usually becomes even more difficult and our attitude becomes bitter. At the end, we’re exhausted mentally and physically, gaining nothing. What if we tackle the task differently with a servant’s attitude as if we’re serving the Lord in worship? Notice that with a changed focus we begin to think of all God has done for us instead of focusing on ourselves. We could never repay God for what He has done for us, but with our focus on Him, we now have the opportunity to honor Him with a humble servant attitude. After all, God is loving, faithful, forgiving, generous, kind, good and holy and with all of that said, He is still so much more. When our attitude toward serving is out of gratitude, it persuades us to serve more. We become humble and attract others to want to come and serve alongside us. We gain a heart filled with joy and we are pleasing to our Father in heaven. Men may never be satisfied with our service or even say thank you, but our reward is from the Lord and in Him we gain everything.

Before we begin to serve, we must remember to pray and ask God for His help. Then, if we fail, we repent and redirect our focus back to serving Him our Lord.

This devotional was so great and helpful to me in many ways. Sometimes in life we get stuck in a routine and/or a rut and our service loses its purpose. I definitely have to be more mindful to focus on God and allow him to fill me with a servants heart. Amen.

This is such a great reminder for us all! It never fails that when I'm struggling in my job it's because I've taken my focus off of God and put it somewhere else (usually on myself). Or when I look to my boss for recognition of a job well done I am oftentimes left feeling unappreciated. As pointed out in the devotion though, when I check my attitude and "serve The Lord" in my work, not only does it make it easier on myself but I also know HE appreciates me abundantly!!

Great devotional! It is a reminder to me to slow down, step back and always keep my focus on God. Life is so crazy whizzing by at lightening speed that I get so caught up in the everyday chaos it is easy to lose focus and become judgmental towards people when things do not go the way I think they should. I forget to be thankful to God for all that he does for me each day. Thank you for the reminder to keep a servants heart and a joyful attitude.
