Solid Foundation

Keith Knight

"Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them, may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock.  And the rain fell, and the floods came, and winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock."  Matthew 7:24-25

What foundation are you building your life upon?

In 1173, the foundation was laid for one of Italy's most famous structures: a tower that would stand next to a cathedral.  But during the construction period, they discovered that the soil was softer than they had previously thought, and the tower began to sink.  Today, the top of the tower is nearly 13 feet off center. People come from around the world to see the "Leaning Tower of Pisa", and scientists travel to Pisa yearly to measure its slow descent. They calculate that with current movement, it will one day collapse.

Anyone in the construction industry, and skilled in their profession, will tell you that there is nothing more important than laying the right foundation.  If you don't get the foundation right, everything else will be a problem.  If the foundation isn't right, nothing else will matter.  Others will say that the most important, and the fun part in construction, is deciding what color pallet and paint they will use, along with how they will decorate the space.  Construction can be challenging, no matter what side of the fence you're on, the building or decor side.  Just watch an episode of HGTV and you'll get the picture!

In Matthew 7:21-29, Jesus teaches about two men who built houses, one on rock and the other sand.  It appears that both men had the same aspiration.  Each man wanted a house that they could live in with their families.  Both men were interested in the same thing.  I believe that many people today have those same desires.  From the outside, they both looked great.  But in reality, one is built on the solid foundation, Jesus Christ, and the other is not.

The foundations people build in life are crucial.  What are your personal convictions?  What are your core values in life?  What determines how you make choices and decisions?  For you?  For your family?  If your foundation is not built on the solid rock, Jesus Christ, then a breakdown will happen over a period of time.  It may be subtle, but nonetheless, a collapse will occur because it hasn't been built on a proper foundation.  A person that is "leaning" in the slightest bit today will one day experience a complete crash if not corrected.

Are you building your life on the solid foundation?

If you are not, place your faith in Jesus Christ and it will forever stand the test of time.
