Psalm 91:1 “He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.”
What fears are you facing today? What troubles are on the horizon in your life?
Whatever trials are going on in your life today, I would encourage to think 9-1-1. That’s Psalm 91:1, “He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.” It’s probably no fluke that this is the 9-1-1 verse?
It’s comforting to know that God is the place of refuge. He is our safe place. The word “dwell” used in this verse actually means, “to take up permanent residence in.” God reminds us that we need to stay in His presence. His Word says that if we do that, we will “rest” in the very "shadow of the Almighty."
Think of shadows and shelters for a minute. Shadows and shelters provide a place of protection or covering, a source of relief from the direct heat of the sun, or severe weather conditions. The heat and extreme weather conditions can represent the real struggles and challenges we face in life. God never says that we won't face hard times. But He does say He'll be with us. He reminds us we're not alone. As we search for relief it’s refreshing to note that God speaks truth and gives us His promises. He says, “Take up permanent residence in my shadow, walk close by my side.” And as we listen and obey, we will find rest and may never face the full array of heat, anxieties and distress that come throughout our life journey. We may never fully know how much God has protected and sheltered us. Why? Because God is in control.
As you read through the entire chapter of Psalm 91, you realize that it’s filled with the God’s goodness and His supremacy. It reminds us that God is faithful to work on behalf of those who love Him.
And God gives us 8 promises of why we do not have to fear in verses 14-16 of Psalm 91.
“Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name. He will call on me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.” Psalm 91:14-16
"I will rescue him..."
"I will protect him..."
"I will answer him..."
"I will be with him in trouble..."
"I will deliver him..."
"I will honor him..."
"I satisfy him..."
"I will show him my salvation."
Lord, today we thank you for your presence. Thank you that you are God Almighty. Thank you for the shelter and shadow you give us. Thank you for being a strong tower of refuge and strength. Thank you that your words bring comfort, hope and peace. Help us to seek you and trust you. Help us to bring you glory and honor. In Jesus Holy Name. Amen.
