“Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God, this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is, his good, pleasing and perfect will.” Romans 12:1-2 (NIV 1984)
January 13 – Set Your Mind on What the Spirit Desires
Begin your time with God in prayer.
Praise God for who He is. Confess any sin so that nothing blocks your fellowship with Him. Ask God to use the Spirit and the Word to transform your life.
Let God’s Word penetrate your head and your heart.
Write out Romans 12:1-2. It’s our verse of the year and we want to learn it.
"Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace." Romans 8:5-6
Where we set our minds determines the quality and outcome of our lives. If we want a life filled with the blessings of God, a life of peace, joy, and love, we need to change what we set our minds on. In the days ahead, we will be learning how to set our minds on the things of God. As our focus changes, we will begin to see the transformation we hope for. So, be patient. Accept that it’s a process. Set your mind on the things above.
Apply God’s Word to your life.
Indentify one area where you focus on what your flesh desires (money, power, food, sex, drugs, alcohol…).
How has being focused on that area affected your life?
What do you think God desires for that area of your life?
Ask God’s Spirit to help you focus on what God desires.
Father, I praise You that life and peace come from setting our minds on what the Spirit desires. Forgive me for focusing on what my flesh desires. Help me to set my mind on what You desire today, loving You and loving others. Amen.
