“Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God, this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is, his good, pleasing and perfect will.” Romans 12:1-2 (NIV 1984)
January 24 – Serve to Please God
Begin your time with God in prayer.
Praise God for who He is. Confess any sin so that nothing blocks your fellowship with Him. Ask God to use the Spirit and the Word to transform your life.
Let God’s Word penetrate your head and your heart.
Read Romans 12:1-2 out loud. It’s our verse of the year and we want to learn it.
"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving." Colossians 3:23-24
When we give ourselves fully to God, we are offering to serve Him – all day, every day. Sometimes there are opportunities to serve in areas we love under people we love to serve with. Other times, it can be inconvenient, difficult or dirty. I remember one day when someone threw up on the carpet in the Children’s Building. Lots of people scattered but Joe, who just happened to be walking by, said he’d take care of it. And he did. Right away. That is a man who serves the Lord!
Apply God’s Word to your life.
In what situations do you need to remember that you are serving God and not men?
When do you let your relationships with people affect how you serve?
Ask God to help you see what needs to be done, even if you haven’t been asked to it. When you see it, do it with a joyful heart.
Father, teach me how to serve You whole-heartedly. I confess at times I let my opinions and attitude affect my service. Transform my heart. I want to learn to serve You with all my heart. Amen.
