Rules of the Road
"The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; all who follow His precepts have good understanding." Psalm 111:10
"The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding." Proverbs 9:10
"The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline." Proverbs 1:7
I ride a motorcycle. I ride a Triumph (yes, they still make them!). I enjoy riding it on my days off; cruising through the mountains or to the beach. My wife enjoys riding on the motorbike. I really love riding my motorbike. It gives me a sense of speed and power as the engine roars along the highway. It is a lot of fun and bring me great joy.
I have a few rules about riding my motorbike, though. Even on short trips, I always wear a helmet, it's the law, but it's also a wise thing to do. I always wear a protective jacket. I always wear heavy pants and tall boots. I try to obey the speed limit (though at times it can be difficult). I don't lane split (riding between cars) or try to do dumb stunts. I don't ride around downtown on the LA freeways. I try to avoid heavy traffic areas as much as possible.
I get great joy out of my motorbike, but I also respect it. I know that I can very easily crash and get hurt. I have to remember that I'm not alone on the road. I have to always remember to respect the motorbike and the other cars.
Our relationship with God is very much the same. God loves us. God enjoys blessing us. We can enjoy a loving relationship with God. With God, we can experience the fullness of life (John 10:10). But we also have to remember to respect Him. To "fear the Lord" means we always remember who God is. He is our friend. He is our Savior. He is our Creator. He is our judge. He is our Father. We can and should enjoy our relationship with God! It's the best and most enjoyable relationship we can have! God loves us more than we know, and wants to enjoy being with us! But, we always have to remember to respect God and His rules. God has set values that He wants us to live by. When we live by His rules, He promises great joy and peace and blessing. However, when we forget His rules, when we forget to respect Him, no such blessings or peace or joy should be expected.
The first step to being wise is to have a healthy respect and recognition of who God is. He loves us, wants what's best for us, and has set up values for us to live by so that we can experience all of the love and joy and peace and blessing He has to offer.
