"Then a teacher of the law came to him (Jesus) and said, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.”  Jesus replied, “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”  Matthew 8:18-20

The point Jesus is making is, “Really?  Are you really willing to walk away from the security of your home and follow me?”

I am sitting at my dining room table as I write this.  My radio is playing Christian music.  The heater is on making the temperature pleasant.  My coffee cup is full and I am typing on a computer.  My home is cozy and comfortable.  Compared to the way most people live in the world, my 1200 square foot home is a luxurious castle.  For me, this verse is a reminder that following God fully requires faith and that I need to be careful not to hold on to the comforts of this world so tightly that I can’t say “yes” to God.

Loving Jesus is easy.  Being grateful for the forgiveness of our sins, natural.  Following Jesus fully, much harder, even for a teacher of the Law.

So then, why do we follow Jesus?

Jesus asked His disciples the same question after many people who had been following Him turned back and went home.

Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go?  You have the words of eternal life.  We believe and know that you are the Holy One of God.”  John 6:68-69

Like Peter, I follow Jesus because He is God.  I follow Jesus because He saved me and gave me eternal life.  I follow Jesus because He makes me whole.  I follow Jesus because daily He feeds me and fills me with His Word.  I follow Jesus because He loves me with His unfailing love.  I follow Jesus because…there is no one else who offers what Jesus offers.

Before you panic and wonder if you have to sell your homes to follow God, get to know Him.  Spend time with Him daily.  Get to know Him through His Word.  Fall in love with Him.  Learn to trust Him fully.  Then, following Him fully will be the greatest desire of your heart and you’ll have the faith to say “yes” to whatever He asks.
