“Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God, this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is, his good, pleasing and perfect will.” Romans 12:1-2 (NIV 1984)
January 25 – Prepared to Serve
Begin your time with God in prayer.
Praise God for who He is. Confess any sin so that nothing blocks your fellowship with Him. Ask God to use the Spirit and the Word to transform your life.
Let God’s Word penetrate your head and your heart.
Read Romans 12:1-2 out loud. It’s our verse of the year and we want to learn it.
"It was he (Christ) who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ." Ephesians 4:11-13
Sometimes our spiritual lives are out of balance. We spend lots of time listening to God’s Word and little time serving as God designed. God intends you and me, not just the leaders, to do the work of ministry. He sends us gifted leaders to equip us. When we all serve and use our giftedness, God’s church is built up, needs are met, people come to Christ and grow to maturity and, most importantly, God is gloried!
Apply God’s Word to your life.
In what areas would you like to be trained for ministry?
What areas do you need to be trained in, but you are a little scared?
Where could your service at Sunrise help our ministry be more effective?
Who will you ask to train you to serve?
Who can you train to serve in an area of ministry?
Father, I am beginning to understand that You want to use all of us in Your church. Help me take the initiative to be equipped for ministry. Use me to help prepare others for service in Your church. Make us a church where we all joyfully serve You and one another. Amen.
Related verses to meditate on:
"So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness." Colossians 2:6-7
"To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder, a witness of Christ’s sufferings and one who also will share in the glory to be revealed: Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, serving as overseers—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not greedy for money, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock." 1 Peter 5:1-3
"Teach the older men to be temperate, worthy of respect, self-controlled, and sound in faith, in love and in endurance. Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good. Then they can train the younger women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God. Similarly, encourage the young men to be self-controlled. In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us." Titus 2:3-8
