Pleasing the Spirit
"Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life." Galatians 6:8
You are driving on a long trip to visit with family for a holiday gathering. In the backseat, hostility is escalating between your ten-year-old and twelve-year-old children. While trying to pay attention to traffic and be alert for the next turnoff, you are listening to the words coming from the back seat and realize you have a decision to make. Will you engage in the conflict, will you lose your temper and discipline the children, or will you firmly correct them with your emotions under the Spirit’s control?
Although most of us have experienced similar circumstances, we haven’t always recognized the opportunity to “walk in the Spirit” or “please the Spirit." Throughout our day, each of us has a lot of these opportunities. They aren't supernatural experiences, they are practical opportunities for submission to God’s will in our day to day circumstances. Moreover, pleasing the Spirit is a lifestyle that we develop as a result of these experiences. We are constantly learning to act and react under the direction and influence of the Spirit rather than being controlled by emotions or personality.
Each day brings new opportunities to cooperate with the Spirit’s will and power and “please the Spirit” or “walk in the Spirit.” By taking one trusting step at a time, we can experience the joy and fruit of pleasing the Lord. I am certain that you will have an opportunity today, what will be your decision?
