Overcoming the Temptation of Under-Appreciation

“Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God, this is your spiritual act of worship.  Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.  Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is, his good, pleasing and perfect will.”  Romans 12:1-2 (NIV 1984)

February 13 – Overcoming the Temptation of Under-Appreciation

Begin your time with God in prayer.

Praise God for who He is.  Confess any sin so that nothing blocks your fellowship with Him.  Ask God to use the Spirit and the Word to transform your life.

Let God’s Word penetrate your head and your heart.

Read Romans 12:1-2 out loud.

"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving."  Colossians 3:23-24

We’ve looked at this verse a few times in the last 40 days, and we’ll look at it again today.  Reading a verse once does not renew our minds.  We renew our minds when we read it over and over, let its truth penetrate our hearts and confront our sin, daily apply its truth to our lives, and wrestle through our fleshly responses until we yield to the will of God.

Apply God’s Word to your life.

Ask God to examine your thoughts, your words, and your actions over the last few days.  When did you shift from seeking to please God with your efforts to please people?  How would you have thought and acted differently if your sole goal was to please God?  Adjust your life again.  Walk forward, dependent on the Lord.  Serve Him to the best of your ability.  Confess your excuses.  Look forward to your inheritance.

Father, teach me perseverance.  Help me to be receptive to the guiding of Your Word and Your Spirit.  Convict me of my sin and rationalizations.  Help me serve You with all my heart.  Amen.

Related verses to meditate on:

"Am I now trying to win the approval of men, or of God? Or am I trying to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ."  Galatians 1:10

"Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. 2 Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God."  Hebrews 12:1-2
