Overcoming the Temptation of Adversity: Persevere in Affliction

“Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God, this is your spiritual act of worship.  Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.  Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is, his good, pleasing and perfect will.”  Romans 12:1-2 (NIV 1984)

February 12 – Overcoming the Temptation of Adversity: Persevere in Affliction

Begin your time with God in prayer.

Praise God for who He is.  Confess any sin so that nothing blocks your fellowship with Him.  Ask God to use the Spirit and the Word to transform your life.

Let God’s Word penetrate your head and your heart.

Read Romans 12:1-2 out loud.  It’s our verse of the year and we want to learn it.

"Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us."  Romans 5:1-5

Have you ever done the absolute best you could have done, followed all the rules and training, been a team player, sacrificed for the whole, and then have a decision from another knock the wind out of your sails?  When it happens, we have two choices.  We can react in the flesh or respond in the Spirit.  Our goal is to learn to choose the latter.  Our God is bigger than any human decision and He is not limited by our human methods.  Let the adversity bring you to your knees.  Let your adversity grow your faith.  God sees.  God knows.  God can work around and through any decision.

Apply God’s Word to your life.

Praise God for who He is.

Ask God to help you trust Him in spite of the circumstances.

Take the phrase, “It’s not fair” out of your vocabulary.  Life is not fair.

Draw on God’s resources to move forward.

Give God all the praise.

Father, may my circumstances bring glory to Your Name.  Help me not to trust my emotions.  Renew my heart with Your Word and Spirit. Help me speak words that will only build others up and glorify You.  I look forward to lifting up Your Name and giving You the glory.  Amen.

Related verses to meditate on:

"Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade—kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed."  1 Peter 1:3-7
