"For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want." Galatians 5:17
Do you sometimes surprise yourself at the end of a day with how well you lived for God? Are you amazed, on other days, how you could mess up so much? Welcome to the Christian life.
The Apostle Paul teaches us not to be surprised when we experience these ups and downs in our daily walk. Until we see Jesus, we are plagued with the fallen sinful nature that can sometimes get stubborn. But, that does not mean that we live in continual defeat.
Most of the great accomplishments in life come through struggle. No musician, however gifted, can become great without ceaseless practice. No athlete can sustain winning performances without vigorous training.
Similarly, we will face struggles in our life, especially with sin. But we must not allow it to master us. Listen to these verses, and let them speak to your heart:
"Since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God." II Corinthians 7:1
"No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize." I Corinthians 9:27
"Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God - this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is - His good, pleasing and perfect will." Romans 12:1-2
"Victory in Jesus"
I heard an old old story, how a Savior came from glory
How He gave His life on Calvary, to save a wretch like me
I heard about His groaning, of His precious blood's atoning
Then I repented of my sins and won the victory
O victory in Jesus, my Savior, forever
He sought me and bought me, with His redeeming blood
He loved me ere I knew Him, and all my love is due Him
He plunged me to victory, beneath the cleansing flood
