My Hope is in the Lord

Debbi Goolsby

"Lord, remind me how brief my time on earth will be.  Remind me that my days are numbered - how fleeting my life is...  My entire lifetime is just a moment to you...And so, Lord, where do I put my hope?  My only hope is in you."  Psalm 39:4-7 (NLT)

I recently lost a very dear friend to cancer.  She suffered for a year with lung cancer (she never smoked) and continued to remind me how she was trusting Jesus with her future, whether it was to be with Him, or stay here on earth to continue to share Him with those she came into contact with.

Early on in her life, she would call to ask me to pray for her about whatever situation she was facing.  I would ask her if she was also praying, but she would say she didn't think that God was listening to her, but that He would listen to me.  Does the fact that I am a Children's Director make my prayers more important?  I told her that our God didn't play favorites just because I was working in a church.  (2 Chronicles 30:27 "..., and God heard their prayer from His holy dwelling in heaven.")  I continued to ask her about her relationship with Jesus and she would just say that it was okay.  But, the more that we talked and the more that we shared, she came to realize that it was her relationship with Jesus that was the most important, not what she could glean through me.  As I look back, I can see how God was preparing her and letting her fall in love with Him by herself, not through my prayers for her needs.  Our God is an awesome God and when we put our hope in Him, our future should not be in fear, but in rejoicing that His timing for us is perfect.

I miss Julie terribly now and tears even fall as I write this, but I am so thankful that she put her trust in God and knew where she was going to spend eternity.  Where is your hope?  Is it in the God who loves you and has already prepared a place for you with Him?  I know that I will see Julie again someday in heaven and that will be an awesome day.

So, my challenge to you...make sure that your "hope" is secure in Jesus Christ.  Accept Him as your personal Savior and rest in that assurance of your future with Him in heaven.

"This is eternal life; that they may know You, the only true God, and the One You have sent - Jesus Christ."  John 17:3 (NLT)

This devotion really touches home for me! Within the last year I have really understood that we are not promised tomorrow or the next. I lost my husband over a year ago and my father is very ill. But my eye is on the Lord and I indulge in giving him all the praise and honor he deserves. I urge everyone to build and continue to build their relationship in the Lord and with the Lord, he is almighty and glorious. My energy wisdom and being all come from him and I feel honored to confidently say when my day comes I will go home to our Almighty. May God bless you and give you stregnth through your day to day life as he has given me. Thank you Debbi for your uplifting story!!

Thank you so much Debbi. My mother suffered with lung cancer before going home to the Lord. Your devotion brought tears to my eyes and it also brought me memories of mom. It was a rough time but at least now they are no longer suffering with this disease and we will see them again. Praise Jesus fot the days that we do have left on earth and may we use them to glorify Him. Thanks again Debbi.
