"Delight yourself in the LORD and He will give you the desires of your heart." Psalm 37:4
Last week, I was sent out on an early morning grocery trip to pick up some eggs for breakfast. On my way home from the store, I was listening to the local Christian radio station and the DJ said he was giving away two tickets to Christmas Concert being performed by Michael W. Smith. He said the first caller to call with the correct answer to a Christmas trivia type question would win. If you don’t know me, I love trivia and I’m competitive. I love Jeopardy, Trivial Pursuit, Sports Trivia, etc., and I love Bible trivia even more, so I was excited to answer the question and to win the prize! The question was, “In Matthew 2, the prophecy given about Jesus being born in Bethlehem is found in what Old Testament book?" The answer is … read through the rest of the devotional and I’ll reveal it at the end.
Needless to say, I called in with the correct answer and won two tickets to see Michael W. Smith do his Christmas Concert at the Sergerstrom Concert Hall in Costa Mesa, CA. My wife, Andria, and I went and we enjoyed the concert immensely. But here’s the best part of the story – my wife loves Michael W. Smith’s music, so I want to share how this was a little reminder of God’s love. My wife wrote this on her Facebook page.
“Cool story... this morning I was making breakfast while listening to the song "Christmas Anthem" that has this great orchestra ending by Michael W. Smith. I was thinking how beautiful it would be to hear it live. Then, a few minutes later Kevin said that he had just won concert tickets on the radio to hear an orchestra and Michael W. Smith - Christmas Concert! Crazy- I know! The kids got to hear his name (Kevin) announced on the radio & I get to hear that beautiful music live Thursday night!! Praise God!”
Sometimes in life, God shows Himself to us in the most surprising ways. This was one of those types of experiences. God provided for us in a most unusual way, and in a way that brought a smile to our heart. He knew that my wife loved Michael W. Smith’s music, and that I would be able to call in and answer the question correctly. I had just finished studying that chapter of Matthew the week before in order to teach a lesson for our student ministries. He also had us plan ahead so that our four kids were going to spend the night with my sister-in-law so we didn’t need to find childcare. I looked it up online and these tickets started at $35 each, way more than what we could afford. We sat in the orchestra seating, tickets that normally run about $150 each. So God not only smiled upon and gave us the desire of our hearts, but He blessed above and beyond the minimum. We got top seats and free childcare! God is good!
If we delight ourselves in Jesus and put our faith and trust in Him, with both our words and deeds, then He will bless us and give us the desires of our hearts because our hearts will want what He wants. Our desires will be led by the Holy Spirit, and we will delight ourselves in Jesus and in the things of our Lord, not the things of this world.
By the way, the answer to the trivia question for all you Bible trivia people is Micah 5:2. But the other lesson in all this is if you know your Bible and more importantly, know how to apply it to your life, it will pay off (literally in some cases).
Merry Christmas to all and Happy New Year!
