"My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me." John 10:27
"Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see." Hebrews 11:1
Listening is a big part of walking with God. Listening to God as He reveals Himself, His ways and His purposes in the Scriptures. Listening to the Holy Spirit as He brings God’s Word back to our minds to guide us with them. Listening to godly friends as they share God’s wisdom. I heard two great nuggets of wisdom from two of my friends this week.
The first was an illustration of faith. A friend shared how when we place an order online, it almost always gives a delivery date. Instead of doubting that the item will come, we wait with anticipation to receive what we ordered. In contrast, when we find God’s promises in Scripture, we are often filled with doubt and unbelief, or we have a more passive response like – “it would be nice if”. We don’t believe what God promises could happen in our lives. I loved being challenged to wait on God for His promises with the same anticipation I wait for a purchase.
Another friend shared with me that lack of prayer is a sign of unbelief. She’s right. Lack of connection with God means we are living by our strength, independent of God, trusting in ourselves. The next thing I did was evaluate my prayer life. Did my prayer life reflect belief or unbelief? How much do I do on my own? What do my prayers reveal about my faith?
Father, as I go about my day, let me be in conversation with You, listening, believing, anticipating, depending on You.
