Just a Test Pilot

Cliff Ellison

It's hard to believe, but according to Wikipedia, the F-11 Tiger is noted as being the first jet aircraft to shoot itself down.  On September 21, 1956, during a test firing of its 20mm cannons, pilot Tom Attridge fired two bursts mid-way through a shallow dive.  At the velocity and trajectory of the cannon rounds decayed, they ultimately crossed paths, and in a million-to-one chance, the plane was disabled and Attridge was forced to crash land; miraculously, he survived.

The incident reminds me so much of mankind.  We strive so hard to improve our lives, but in the process, we ultimately shoot ourselves down.  It probably didn't even cross the pilots mind that he would cross paths with the bullets.  He did not have full knowledge of the aircraft, or of the 20 mm cannons mounted on his aircraft.  His excuse was that he was just a "test pilot".

We as Christians do not have an excuse.  We are not test pilots.  Everything we need to know is written in the Word of God.  We normally shoot ourselves down by being overzealous and lacking knowledge.

Romans 10:1-2 - "Brothers, my hearts desire and prayer to God for the Israelites is that they may be saved.  For I can testify about them that they are zealous for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge."

Hosea 4:6 - "My people are destroyed by lack of knowledge."

The journey that we are on has been chartered.  God has given us Jesus to show us the way and the Holy Spirit to guide us.  Unlike the test pilot who is often challenged by experimental flights, man's only real challenge is to follow God.

Pray:  Philippians 4:6 - "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests made known to God."

Read:  II Timothy 2:15 - "Do your best to present yourself to God  as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the Word of truth."

Trust:  Proverbs 3:5-6 - "Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.

Nothing is Impossible

Nothing is impossible when you put your trust in God
Nothing is impossible when you're trusting in His Word
Hearken to the voice of God to thee
"Is there anything too hard for Me?"
Then put your trust in God alone and rest upon His Word
For ev'rything, O, ev'rything, yes ev'rything is possible with God
