It's Not Your Party

“Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God, this is your spiritual act of worship.  Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.  Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is, his good, pleasing and perfect will.”  Romans 12:1-2 (NIV 1984)

January 7 – It’s Not Your Party

Begin your time with God in prayer.

Praise God for who He is.  Confess any sin so that nothing blocks your fellowship with Him.  Ask God to use the Spirit and the Word to transform your life.

Let God’s Word penetrate your head and your heart.

Read Romans 12:1-2 out loud.  It’s our verse of the year and we want to learn it.

"'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.'  The second is this: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'  There is no commandment greater than these."  Mark 12:30-31

I read the story of a little boy who walked in from recess to see his kindergarten room decorated for a birthday party.  There were balloons and streamers everywhere and favor bags at every desk.  As his eyes scanned the room, they came to rest on one desk, piled high with presents.  The more he looked at the presents, the more upset he became.  His lower lip protruded and the groans became louder as each minute went by.  Finally one the mothers stooped down and looked this little boy in the eye and said, “It’s not your party.”

The biggest struggle we all face in giving ourselves to God is our own self-centeredness.  We can’t give our all to God and have life be about us.  We mistakenly think God is here to give us what we want and we get upset when He doesn’t.  We think people are in our lives to meet our needs.  The words that come out of our mouths are, “I deserve…, I am entitled…, I need…”  Unfortunately, it’s not about us, it’s all about God and giving our all to Him.  It’s about loving Him and loving others.

Apply God’s Word to your life.

In what ways do you live like it’s your party?

Ask God to show you how often you use the word “I”.

Reread Mark 12:30-31.  How can you love God today?

Whom does God want you to love today with His love?

Father, I confess that I struggle with my self-centeredness every day.  Forgive me for the times I think it’s my party.  Use Your Word today to show me when I am focused on me.  Help me learn to offer myself to You every day, to love You with all my heart, soul, mind and strength and to love those who cross my path today.

"Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God.  Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things."  Colossians 3:1-2
