Is There a Samuel in You

Debbi Goolsby

"The boy Samuel ministered before the Lord under Eli.  In those days the word of the Lord was rare; there were not many visions."  I Samuel 3:1

I was listening to a sermon the other day that really struck me when the question was asked, "Are you being an Eli to a Samuel?"  Wow!  What a thought and a responsibility we are given when we are working with children.  AND what a privilege it is to know that there are "Samuel's" in my life and that I have the responsibility to keep them directed to Jesus.

How can I share with them how important it is to listen to God and do what He says?  As you read the story of Samuel in I Samuel 3, you will see how he heard the voice of God at a very early age.  He kept going back to Eli and Eli kept directing him back to God.  Samuel just wasn't getting it and kept going back.  And Eli continued to "direct".

What type of advise or direction are you giving to those kids that are in your circle of influence?  Are you teaching them to choose the path that leads to God, or are you letting others do the directing?

As we see in this short story of Samuel with Eli, we see that it took Samuel more than one, "I did not call you, go back and lie down" before he realized that it was Eli calling him, but God calling his name.  Think of how many times God has to call your name before you recognize Him and answer.  We are a stubborn people and even as we teach others, we can see that it takes some of us over and over to "hear" and just do as God says!

After 3 times, we see that in verse 10, "the Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, "Samuel!  Samuel!", then Samuel said, "Speak, for your servant is listening."  Finally, Samuel realized that it was God calling him and he listened.

Look at what Eli taught Samuel and what Samuel learned.  Who is the Samuel in your life and will you realize the importance of your roll as an "Eli" to a child?
