Is Enough ever Enough?

John Hill

"Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.  His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and goodness.  Through these He has given us His very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires."  2 Peter 1:2-4

I recently saw an ad for a small appliance. I was convinced that I had to have it so I began my “sales pitch” to my wife attempting to persuade her about how much better life would be after we purchased the new toy by which I became so fascinated.  I explained how meals would be easier, faster, and better prepared if we called the number and placed our order.  I even highlighted the fact that if we ordered in the next twenty minutes, we would get two of the item!  I was proud of myself.

Imagine my shame when my wife politely waited for me to finish rambling on before reminding me that we already had one of the “miracle machines.”  It was packed away somewhere in our garage from the last time I was inspired to buy one.  I even think we may have two of them.  Life is like that sometimes.  We convince ourselves that something is missing, that somehow life is coming up short and if we just had that “one thing,” our live would be better.

In 2 Peter 1, the apostle Peter informs us that there is indeed “one thing” that makes life better: it is knowing “God and…Jesus our Lord” (v.2).  But he also tells us that through knowing God we are granted everything we need “for life and godliness.”  In other words, we don’t really need anything else.  While we may want a bunch of other stuff, or other relationships, we actually have all we need in our relationship with God.

During this Thanksgiving season, I encourage you to take an inventory of all that God has blessed you with starting with inviting you into His Kingdom through your relationship with Him.  Ask yourself if you believe that knowing God is enough.  Are you still holding out for something you think is better?  Do you think that something is still missing? Understand that whatever you are looking for and whatever you think will make your life complete is already available to you through God.  And if you are a Christian, you have had it all along so you don’t need to look anywhere else to find it except to God.

You know something?  After my initial embarrassment, it was actually exciting to go out into my garage and find that small appliance that I thought I so desperately wanted.  The best part was that I didn’t have to pay for it again because I already had it.  The bonus was that I even saw some other stuff that I had tucked away at some point.  I realized that my garage is a virtual treasure chest and already contained much of what I will ever need.

I just needed to revisit it and make it a priority again.

The same is true of our relationship with God.  This Thanksgiving, make it a priority for you again and revisit it. You may be surprised at how much you already own.

My daughter and I had a chat the other day about a phone she had bought me a year or so ago.She was telling me on how I needed a up-grade and I was telling her I just bearley learned how to use it. Well she won and was so Happy to bring me that NEW phone. So I thanked her with a smile and a hug.So I expleaned to Her about the up-grade in our life when JESUS called and how these things just don't mean as much as a great serman or a chance to see the true and living GOD's work around us. So we both thanked GOD!for our gifts. Thanks for all You Do...
