I Would Never Say, "I told You So"

Lanita Perez

“And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God ask of you but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him, to love him, to serve the lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to observe the Lord’s commands and decrees that I am giving you today for your own good?” Deuteronomy 10:12-13

Children are a blessing from God whether you have your own or if they are somehow entwined in your life through other experiences like family or work. If you have had the opportunity to teach, guide or train them you know that it isn’t easy. It is challenging to choose to pour out love, patience and understanding again and again when you are building up a child for their own good. The hope is that the child that you are pouring into has a desire to listen and do the things that are taught so their life could be lived with less trials and more blessings.

When I was a teenager I knew everything. My mom would gently give me guidance and instruction and I could not understand for-the-life-of-me why. She took the time to counsel me on the experiences that I verbally shared with her as if she knew what I was talking about. She also expected me to listen and follow through on the advice she gave me. After all she would say, “I wasn’t always the age I am now, I was a teenager once just like you.” What! I knew realistically she was a teenager at one time, but that was hundreds of years ago. As I grew tired of rebelling and began taking the valuable advice mom generously gave out, life began to change. Life was not perfect, yet when I saw the love and concern she had for me I knew that doing things her way would benefit me and bring blessing to her.

God’s love and concern for us is greater than any other love we will ever experience. He instructs us through His word and He sent His son Jesus Christ to pay the price for our sins. God knows what is good for us and the only way we can live a life pleasing to Him is to consciously choose to fear, obey, love and serve Him with all our heart and soul.

We are in the habit of giving careful instruction to those we love, so it is with God. There is nothing that we will come up against that is greater than Him. He is more than a parent or hero He is our God the Creator.

You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. 1 John 4:4

Although many times I went my own way and made the choices that mom advised me against never did she say, “I told you so”. Instead she would gather me back into the fold looking at me ever so gently with a gaze that spoke volumes of love and forgiveness. God’s love for us is much greater. Surely He wants to gather us back into His loving arms when we stray off course.

God our father wants our love, obedience and most of all our heart completely in love with Him. Let’s see Him with reverent fear, giving Him obedience to His commands and loving Him with all our heart and soul. A life lived sold out to God is a life glorifying to the Father and that would be for our own good.
