Hope This Christmas!

Mitch Cariaga

"Even when there was no reason for hope, Abraham kept hoping...For God had said to him, "That's how many descendants you will have!"  Romans 4:18

I recently had dinner with a gentleman that was working on a ship in the Indian Ocean and his vessel was taken over by Malaysian pirates.  They put the 23 crewman in life rafts and set them adrift with no food and no water.  His story of their survival on the open ocean was worth the price of the meal.

It is said that human beings can live for 40 days without food, four days without water, and four minutes without air.  But, we cannot live for four seconds without hope.

Hope is an amazing antidote.  It sustained these men throughout their ordeal.  It sustains us throughout bouts of heartache, hurt, and hopelessness.

But often hope is portrayed as wishful thinking.  I hear statements such as..."It will all work out."  "You'll be able to beat this."  "Just hang in there, you'll make it."

These are simply statements of positive encouragement; but, they're not professions of hope!

Hope is when help is on the way!  Hope is when the hand of assistance is extended to you!  Hope is when a Savior leaves heaven, comes to our human world as a child and offers deliverance!

How can you tell the difference betwewen trite remarks and real offers of hope?  In Romans 4:18, it says that Abraham kept hoping, for God had said...When God speaks, His words can be trusted.

So this Christmas, trust in real hope, not just platitudes.  Trust in what God said...that's real hope!  That's the real deal!"
