Help is on the way

Sam Petitfils

“Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” 1 Peter 1:6-7

Skilled counselors will tell you the number one thing to remember when dealing with stressed individuals is to instill hope.  That’s good advice, knowing that God provides comfort for us when we feel faint, or the burden is too great to bear.  The secular saying goes something like this:  God helps those who help themselves.  Actually, God helps those who humble themselves.  When we humble ourselves, we are admitting we have lost control of a situation and are turning to God for help.  God’s response to a humble heart is to provide help.

The next truth we learn from these verses is that our trials will not last forever.  Even in this life, God provides relief and comforts us in our tribulations (2 Corinthians 1:4).  Peter writes, “. . . that he may lift you up in due time.”  The moment God ordained a trial for us, He also determined an end.  In one sense, all of life is one big trial.  We begin life in a sin-cursed world, live out our lives with other sinners, and ultimately die because we are sinners.  But don’t forget the “due time” that Peter mentions.  The child of God beset with various trials needs to remember the final chapter has already been written, and it’s a glorious one.  God will lift you up in resurrection glory, just as He raised Jesus up (2 Corinthians 4:14).  Do not grow discouraged, but keep moving forward for God.

Finally, Peter tells us what to do with those anxieties: cast them on God.  This is one of the grand invitations in the Bible, yet few people take advantage of it.  Instead they allow the weight of their difficulties to cause endless stress leading to joyless days and sleepless nights.  Cast your anxieties on God!  He knows what to do with them.  Think of Philippians 4:4-7.

"Rejoice in the Lord always.  I will say it again: Rejoice!  Let your gentleness be evident to all.  The Lord is near.  Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

These words speak of a caring God always willing to carry the load of our restless hearts.  When we give our stresses to God, He gives us something in return: peace surpassing all understanding.

Do you trust in God to see you through?  Have you meditated on the promises of God to draw comfort?  He will lift you up one day.  Sometimes He will bless your circumstances in this life with amazing deliverances, and we need to thank Him for that.  But He will bless you with the ultimate “lifting up,” when we enter our heavenly rest.

Trust and Obey

When we walk with the Lord in the light of His Word, what a glory He sheds on our way.

When we do His good will He abides with us still, and with all who will trust and obey.

Chorus:

Trust and obey, for there's no other way

To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.
