Growing in Giving Requires Sacrifice

“Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God, this is your spiritual act of worship.  Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.  Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is, his good, pleasing and perfect will.”  Romans 12:1-2 (NIV 1984)

January 29 – Growing in Giving Requires Sacrifice

Begin your time with God in prayer.

Praise God for who He is.  Confess any sin so that nothing blocks your fellowship with Him.  Ask God to use the Spirit and the Word to transform your life.

Let God’s Word penetrate your head and your heart.

Read Romans 12:1-2 out loud.  It’s our verse of the year and we want to learn it.

"But just as you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in your love for us—see that you also excel in this grace of giving."  2 Corinthians 8:7

Just as we want to learn to give all that we are to God, we need to learn to give all that we have to God.  We begin by first recognizing that everything is God’s.  Most of us, though, live as though everything we have is ours.  We earned it…and we deserve it.  In order to increase our giving, we will need to relinquish our hold on what we have.  Thank God for everything you have.  Decide to be a good steward of what He has given you.  Begin to pray about what you will sacrifice so you can increase your giving to God – eating out  at restaurants less, your daily Starbucks, the latest computer game, a trip to a theme park, a newer car...?

Apply God’s Word to your life.

Pray about what God would have you sacrifice so that you can give to Him first.

Ask God to help you know the difference between needs and wants.  There are a lot of things we can’t imagine living without, but they are still wants.  Just because everyone else has something, it doesn’t mean we need it.

Make a list of everything you spent money this week.  Circle everything that wasn’t a “need.

Father, I want to grow in my giving.  Help me see what I can sacrifice so I can give my tithe or increase my giving.  I am so sorry for the hold my money and my possessions have on my life.  Help me honor You with all that I have.  Amen.
