“For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6
Have you ever gotten an invitation to attend a special occasion, like a Christmas party, a wedding or something of that nature? We all have probably seen invitations that required a RSVP. This French phrase RSVP stands for "répondez, s'il vous plaît," which means "please reply." The person sending the invitation would like you to tell him or her whether you accept or decline the invitation. That is, will you be coming to the event or not? Etiquette rules followed in most Western cultures require that if you receive a formal, written invitation, you should reply promptly; perhaps that same day. To ignore the invitation is really an insult to the person inviting you. Today, God has a special invitation and a gift with your name on it as we celebrate Jesus. It’s personal. It is unique; it is for you!!!
Today is Christmas and we need to celebrate; to rejoice over God’s precious invitation and gift to us. The birth of Jesus Christ is God’s gift to each of us. God’s vertical gift from His throne in heaven was given to us here on earth. It’s was a gift we didn’t deserve. The birth and the gift of Jesus Christ truly explain His purpose for mankind.
This special invitation and gift from God was not an afterthought. Before there was a stable in Bethlehem, before Adam and Eve ever set eyes on each other, God decided to send His Son Jesus Christ to die on the cross for our sins. From the beginning, God knew that every person would fall short of His Holiness and His Righteousness; that humans are born sinners and fall short of His Glory (Romans 3:23). That is why God’s Word proclaims that Jesus Christ was slain from the beginning of the world. God is sovereign and His decision from the very foundation was that Christ would come to this earth to live, to die and rise again from the dead. God’s gift in Jesus Christ our Lord (Romans 6:23) proves His purpose was to redeem us. His vertical gift and invitation to each of us is to come into a personal relationship with Jesus and have eternal life.
Christmas is all about God’s invitation and His gift in the deity of Jesus Christ. Christmas is not about decorations, or shopping, or the gifts under a tree. Christmas is about the vertical gift God gave on the tree, the cross, where Christ died for our sins. God invites each one of us to come into His presence, to believe and to receive His free gift (John 1:12), eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
How will you respond to this RSVP from God? Don’t ignore this RSVP…Today is the day of salvation!!!
