"Many people say, 'Who will show us better times?' Let your face smile on us, LORD. You have given me greater joy than those who have abundant harvests of grain and new wine. In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, O Lord, will keep me safe.'" Psalm 4:6-8
How many times in the last three years have you pleaded with God to show you better times? It seems like our better times are mostly material - when we can have a job or more money, so that we don't have to worry, so we can buy things we want, not just what we need. Sometimes better times have to do with our relationships, when we aren't at odds with our ex's, our kids, our friends, co-workers, or acquaintances. Better times can be when we emerge out of seasons of illness, or what seems like an unending season of grief due to the loss of a loved one.
David, in Psalm 4, said that God had given him greater joy than those who have an abundance of material possessions. In Psalm 16:11 he said, "You will make known to me the path of life; in your presence is fullness of joy. In your right hand there are pleasures forever." David understood what Paul later wrote about in Philippians 4:11b, "for I have learned how to be content with whatever I have." David understood that joy is found in the presence of the Lord and not dependent on circumstances. Don't wait for your circumstances to change. Seek to be rightly related to God and walk in His presence.
Wouldn't you like to be like David who went to sleep at night in peace? Because David understood that safety is not found in this world but in God, he slept peacefully. In John 16:33, Jesus said, "Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world." Isaiah 26:3 says, "You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!" Peace comes when our minds are fixed on God, when we trust God with our lives, and when we live in the light of the truths in His Word. What will it take for you to keep your mind focused on Him today?
Father, help me to walk in joy of Your presence today and sleep in peace tonight as I keep my mind focused on You.
