God's Down Payment

"Set His seal of ownership on us, and put His Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come."  II Corinthians 1:22

When people purchase expensive items, the seller often asks for a down payment.  He knows if you give Him a good sum of money, you will be more apt to make the payments.

God does the opposite.  When He grants us salvation, HE provides the down payment!  That's right.  He gives us the Holy Spirit as a guarantee.  He promises us eternal life, life forevermore in His presence (John 3:15-16).  We might be tempted to say to God, "What can I give you Lord for You to guarantee that promise?"  God replies, "My child, it is not you who provided salvation, but Me.  You did nothing to earn it, so I require no down payment.  Insead, I will provide you with a down payment."

What is God's down payment?  It is the indwelling of His Holy Spirit.  Meditate on the following passages:

"The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship.  And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.”  Romans 8:15

"And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation.  When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of His glory."  Ephesians 1:13-14

"The one who keeps God’s commands lives in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us."  I John 3:24

"This is how we know that we live in him and he in us: He has given us of his Spirit."  I John 4:13

God gives us His Holy Spirit as a promise of what is in store for us, life with Him forevermore.  Does God keep His promises?  Remember, God cannot lie (Titus 1:2; Hebrews 6:18)  Now since God has so graciously given us His Holy Spirit, we need to make sure we:

1.  Do not grieve the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 4:30).

2.  Do not put out the Spirit's fire (I Thessalonians 5:19).

3.  Keep in step with the Spirit (Galatians 5:25).

Let us thank God for His precious Holy Spirit.  It is a gift of infinite value, one we should not take lightly.
