“For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor; no good thing does He withhold from those whose walk is blameless.” Psalm 84:11
These verses really appeal to us, especially at first glance. As we read the verses before it, we should desire its promise even more. It promises protection and even our heart’s desire, “. . .no good thing does He withhold. . .” Who wouldn’t want that? Truthfully, plenty of people would not want this if they knew what it meant.
Let’s look at the heart’s desire of the writer. First of all, he loves God’s dwelling place (verse 1), and yearns after God (verse 2). He finds his strength in God (verses 5-6), and desires God’s favor (verse 9). He values the very acts of going up to the house of God, cherishing it above all else (verse 10). Then, and only then, do we get to verse 11, where God promises not to withhold good things from His children.
Do we really want God’s best for our lives? Are we willing to walk with Him daily, and obey Him? Do we desire the good things God has even if they involve some grief, trial, and growth? Then we will be willing to accept all things from His hand and count it as “good.”
“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows (James 1:17)”
The fact is, anything coming from God is good, and we should desire these things. Yet too often we want the things we think will make us happy, even if they do not line up with God’s will for our lives.
1. Every child of God should know that God will take good care of him or her, and never forsake those who trust in Him (Hebrews 13:5).
2. Every child of God should delight themselves in God, in order that we might recognize God’s blessings when they come, and accept good things as coming from Him.
3. We should thank God continually for His gifts, and credit Him when He comes through for us.
As we delight ourselves in God, we become more and more desirous of promoting His glory and proclaiming His Word. Take heart, child of God, He will come through for you because you trust in Him, and acknowledge the good things as coming from Him.
