God is Bigger than Your Worries

Sam Petitfils

"Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear.  Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?"  Matthew 6:25

Sometimes a little worry goes a long way.  When we lose sight of our child in a large mall, we worry, but then launch out in a quick attempt to locate him or her.  Call it worry, call it adrenaline, it motivated us to action.  Ball players will tell you that they worry a bit just before an at bat, as do actors before a live performance.  If handled correctly, it can make us alert, causing us to focus.  But, if handled improperly, it can cripple us.

Jesus speaks of the second sort of worry, the kind that cripples us, taking over our very lives.  The thrust of this passage is quite simple:  God is bigger than your worries and the things that cause you to worry.  When our minds meditate on the creative power of God, we realize that it's foolish and even silly to worry about things out of our control, but surely under God's control.  Does He who created the world not have enough power to provide your needs?  Does He who knows each word on our tongues before we speak it, not know what to do?  Will God not take care of you?

When you are tempted to fret and worry over life's events, take a step back and ponder the "bigness" of God, the "smartness" of God, and the love of God.  He loves you, knows how to supply your needs, and has the power to bring it all about.

Trust in Him with all your heart and commit your cares to Him.  He will not forsake you nor will He forget you.  He will come through for you in ways that will amaze you.

His Eye is on the Sparrow

Why should I feel discouraged, why should the shadows come

Why should my heart be lonely, and long for heav'n and home

When Jesus is my portion, my constant friend is He

His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me

His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me

Chorus:

I sing because I'm happy, I sing because I'm free

For His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me
