January 9 – Giving Your Mind to God
Begin your time with God in prayer.
Praise God for who He is. Confess any sin so that nothing blocks your fellowship with Him. Ask God to use the Spirit and the Word to transform your life.
Let God’s Word penetrate your head and your heart.
Read Romans 12:1-2 out loud. It’s our verse of the year and we want to learn it.
"Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things." Colossians 3:1-2
All day long our minds receive messages from the internet, from TV, from songs, from things we see and read. Those messages affect what we think about and what we do. When was the last time you saw an enticing food commercial and ran to the kitchen for a snack when you weren’t even hungry. Romans 12:2 tells us that transformation happens when our minds are made new. Our minds are made new by changing what we think about and what we put into them.
Apply God’s Word to your life.
Try to list all the different ways your mind receives information (internet, news, co-workers…).
Ask God to show you how some things you have allowed in your mind have hurt your walk with God.
How would spending more time focusing on God’s greatness, His forgiveness, and His plan change your life?
Father, I give you my mind today. Teach me how to renew my mind so that I can be transformed into the image of Christ. Help me to be aware of when I put something destructive into my mind and then give me the courage to turn it off. Help me to put more of Your Word into my mind and give me the discipline to meditate on it throughout the day. Amen.
