“Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God, this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is, his good, pleasing and perfect will.” Romans 12:1-2 (NIV 1984)
January 8 – Giving Your Heart to God
Begin your time with God in prayer.
Praise God for who He is. Confess any sin so that nothing blocks your fellowship with Him. Ask God to use the Spirit and the Word to transform your life.
Let God’s Word penetrate your head and your heart.
Read Romans 12:1-2 out loud. It’s our verse of the year and we want to learn it.
At that time, Hanani the seer came to Asa king of Judah and said to him: "Because you relied on the king of Aram and not on the Lord your God, the army of the king of Aram has escaped from your hand. Were not the Cushites and Libyans a mighty army with great numbers of chariots and horsemen? Yet when you relied on the Lord, he delivered them into your hand. For the eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him." 2 Chronicles 16:7-9
The heart refers to the core of our being, the decision-making center of our lives. When we give our hearts fully to God, we rely on Him rather than on ourselves or other people. King Asa decided to solve a problem by paying another king for a treaty to protect his people rather than relying on God and doing things His way.
Apply God’s Word to your life.
When are most tempted to rely on yourself rather than God?
What people are you inclined to rely on rather than going to God with your needs?
What scares you about relying fully on God?
Ask God to search your heart and show you where you need to rely on Him today.
Father, thank You that You are a God who changes hearts. Forgive me for the times I try to solve my problems without consulting You or Your Word. As I spend time with You, please transform my heart so I can have a heart like Yours. Amen.
