Giving in This Day and Age?

Scott Stevenson

"Give freely and become more wealthy; be stingy and lose everything.  The generous will prosper; those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed."  Proverbs 11:24-25

We live in a time when people can become very stingy because people are trying to make ends meet.  That is a legitimate excuse, or is it?  God says to give.  What is that?  I'm not sure what your experience has been when it comes to giving, but I feel great when I give to others.  I become jaded due to seeing folks take advantage of people, but the Lord still says to give.  Being in tune with God allows you to give at the appropriate time, and to the right person.  To refresh a person at the appropriate time speaks volumes in witnessing with your life for Christ.

How do you view the economic downturn?  Do you look at it as a curse or a blessing?  This is the best time to give because the need is so great.  You might say to yourself, "I really don't have much to give."  Let us trust God and watch what He can do!  Can God not provide for you?  We tend to put God in a box and act like He is limited like the rest of us.  God is NOT limited.  The critical issue to giving is how much you truly know and trust God.  Look at John 3:16, do I really need to quote this for you...really?  The key word in this verse is God "gave".  Our own salvation and the future salvation of others are predicated on our attitude toward giving.

Proverbs 11:24-25 forces me to look at myself and ask if I know God the way I should.  God's words are true no matter what!  When I first read this verse, it was like a good slap in the face!  For some, it is more like a beating, but that is alright, take the whooping and make the change in your life.  Let's move closer to Him and receive the blessings promised in God's Word.  Let us take hold of the answers to life and ace the test.  It's an open book (Bible) test!

Do you open the Bible everyday to get the answers to life?
