“Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God, this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is, his good, pleasing and perfect will.” Romans 12:1-2 (NIV 1984)
February 1 – Giving Helps Our Hearts be in the Right Place
Begin your time with God in prayer.
Praise God for who He is. Confess any sin so that nothing blocks your fellowship with Him. Ask God to use the Spirit and the Word to transform your life.
Let God’s Word penetrate your head and your heart.
Read Romans 12:1-2 out loud. It’s our verse of the year and we want to learn it.
"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." Matthew 6:19-21
Every day we are tempted with images, ideas and information. What results is a battle for our hearts. Since our hearts are deceitful anyway, it is easy to be enticed by and become enslaved to earthy riches. This is, again, evidence that we need heart transformation. Transformation happens as we begin to store up treasures in heaven. You do this by investing in the three things that last forever – God, God’s Word and people.
Apply God’s Word to your life.
Be praying about the commitments you will make to God.
How many weeks this coming year are you committing to be in Worship Service?
In what ministry would you like to begin serving the people through Sunrise?
What will you give to God’s work at Sunrise Church?
Father, teach me how to store up treasures in heaven. I am so sorry for the times I have been enticed to store up earthy treasures. Help me learn to honor You with my time, in my service, and with my resources so that my treasure is in You. Amen.
Related verses to meditate on:
"When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death." James 1:13-15
"Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.’” 2 Corinthians 9:6-7
"Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” Hebrews 13:5
