“Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God, this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is, his good, pleasing and perfect will.” Romans 12:1-2 (NIV 1984)
January 27 – Giving Develops Faith and Pleases God
Begin your time with God in prayer.
Praise God for who He is. Confess any sin so that nothing blocks your fellowship with Him. Ask God to use the Spirit and the Word to transform your life.
Let God’s Word penetrate your head and your heart.
Write out Romans 12:1-2 from memory as much as possible. It’s our verse of the year and we want to learn it.
"And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him." Hebrews 11:6
Learning to give all that we are and all we have to God takes faith. It is one thing to know the Bible says, “Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops.” (Proverbs 3:9), but it’s another thing to actually give God the first of what we make. I was taught to lay up treasures on this earth. As a child, I was taught that God helps those who help themselves. All I had seen was a few dollars put in the offering plate the few times we attended church. When I came to Christ in college, I learned what God says about giving. I wanted to give but I was scared. It required trusting someone else. Fortunately, I wanted to please God. Every time I gave, God not only met my needs, but He also showed me His faithfulness. Every time I increased my giving, it was scary, but it taught me to trust and rely on God and His Word.
Apply God’s Word to your life.
Evaluate your faith. How much are you trusting in yourself? God?
When are you tempted to trust in yourself rather than God and His Word?
Begin to pray about what step of faith God would have you take in giving to Him.
Father, Your Word says that faith pleases You. Help me learn to trust You and Your Word. I confess that my faith needs to grow. Too much of my life is about me. Help me say “yes” to You even when I am scared. Help me honor You by giving first to You. Transform my heart to trust You. Amen.

But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." Matthew 6:19-21
"No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money." Matthew 6:24
"This is love for God: to obey his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith." 1 John 5:3-4
