“Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God, this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is, his good, pleasing and perfect will.” Romans 12:1-2 (NIV 1984)
January 23 – Gifted for the Common Good
Begin your time with God in prayer.
Praise God for who He is. Confess any sin so that nothing blocks your fellowship with Him. Ask God to use the Spirit and the Word to transform your life.
Let God’s Word penetrate your head and your heart.
Read Romans 12:1-2 out loud. It’s our verse of the year and we want to learn it.
"Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it." 1 Corinthians 12:27
"Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good." 1 Corinthians 12:8
"Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms." 1 Peter 4:10
Our spiritual giftedness is for the common good. We can be tempted to use our giftedness for our glory, only when it is convenient for us, when it is done our way, or when we can be in charge. Rather, we need to be willing to use it when God needs it for His purposes to serve others.
Apply God’s Word to your life.
Thank God for the spiritual giftedness He has given you.
If you know your giftedness, evaluate your use of it. Are you serving others or serving yourself? Are you faithful in showing up to use your giftedness? Do you rely on your power, or Christ’s power to serve?
If you are unaware of your giftedness, identify three different places you might like to serve or where you have skills that might be needed for the common good. Pray about which one you will begin to pursue.
Father, thank You for my giftedness. Help me discover and learn where I can use my giftedness for the good of Your church. Transform my heart. Give me the desire and discipline to serve You and Your church faithfully. Amen.
Related verses to meditate on:
"Now the body is not made up of one part but of many. If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason cease to be part of the body. And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason cease to be part of the body. If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? But in fact God has arranged the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. If they were all one part, where would the body be? As it is, there are many parts, but one body." 1 Corinthians 12:14-20
"Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet." John 13:14
