Gift, Reward, Heritage!

Debbi Goolsby

If you were to look up Psalm 127:3 in your Bible, you would read that “Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him”.  That in the New International Version (NIV).  Then read it in the New Living Translation (NLT), “Children are a gift from the Lord; they are a reward from him”.

Do you endure your children or do you enjoy them?  Our children need to know that their home is a haven of happiness, fun and safety.  A place to have fun parties, having good times as families and a relaxing time together. A family that prays together stays together.  And a family that plays together stays together, too.  So, is that true in your family?

When you receive a birthday gift, it is meant to be enjoyed.  Many parents choose to endure their kids; they don’t enjoy them.  In Deuteronomy 16, we read about how the Israelites are told to “Celebrate with your sons and daughters”.  This is said more than one time.  We need to take these same “charges” and celebrate with our whole family.  Take time to have enjoyable and memorable moments.  If you wait until all your problems are gone to start enjoying life with your kids, you will still be waiting.

Are you too busy to plan the picnic in the back yard?  Why not take your lunch outside today, put a blanket or towel down and enjoy each other while you are eating your jelly sandwiches and apple.  Help your kids build their “forts” in the house on a rainy day with all the pillows and blankets, and let them name their “fort”.  Get down on your hands and knees and crawl through the “fort” and just have fun.

So again I ask, are your children a gift, a reward, a heritage, or do you just endure them?
