Get to Work!
“Work hard to enter the narrow door to God’s Kingdom, for many will try to enter but will fail." Luke 13:24 (NLT)
Someone asked Jesus, “Lord, will only a few be saved?” Jesus gave the above reply with this poor soul standing right in front of him…looking directly at the kingdom of God. The statement in verse twenty-four screams for a couple of questions to be answered:
What does “work hard” (strive) mean?
Work hard (strive) at doing what?
The word “strive” used by Luke means to contend for a prize in some type of public games. This definition portrays the struggle of a runner giving his all at the finish line. A better example for the Christian can be found in scripture:
"Fight the good fight for the true faith. Hold tightly to the eternal life to which God has called you, which you have confessed so well before many witnesses." I Timothy 6:12 (NLT)
"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful." 2 Timothy 4:7 (NLT)
I understand that Jesus’ statement was directed to Jews who had a different view of the kingdom of God. Jesus’ teaching throughout the Bible is clear; a person must accept what He was saying in order to enter the kingdom of God. Fight to obey the Lord and follow Christ, “work hard” to enter the narrow door… it is well worth the struggle. The Lord doesn’t leave us on our own, but He does require our faith and obedience.
I use to think I could read my Bible every once in a while and that would be enough…fat chance! The world would crush me. Forget the world, my own sinful nature worked me over and the world got the leftovers! If you think you can go into spiritual warfare with that type of thinking…you’re sadly mistaken.
I want to encourage you to work hard, strive, to serve the Lord today. We may get knocked down, but get back up. Ask for the Lord to strength in prayer. A successful walk cannot be had without daily Bible study and prayer, or in other words…spending time with the Lord…daily.
Go to work!
