Fight For Your Marriage
"For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh." Genesis 2:24
One of my favorite quotes about marriage was made by a famous German theologian named Dietrich Bonhoeffer. He wrote this while he was still single:
"It’s not love that sustains your marriage; it’s your marriage that sustains your love."
I believe that one of the main reasons we struggle in our marriages is because we get the concepts of love and marriage all turned around and twisted up. You must put love and marriage in the right order in your life or you could end up losing both.
I know a couple who are divorcing. While they are going through the legal process of dissolving their marriage, the husband got himself a girlfriend and his wife got herself a new man in her life.
If you were to say to me that their love is over, I would agree. Their love is long gone. And if love was the most important aspect of a relationship, then I would recommend that they both walk away. But at this stage of their relationship, it’s not about love. Love ended a long time ago. It’s about their marriage. And while there’s a marriage, there’s something worth fighting for.
Today, if your love has taken flight, if your love is being attacked, then fight for your marriage. This is the only way to resurrect your love.
It’s not love that sustains your marriage; it’s your marriage that sustains your love.
